Muslims living in America are diverse and Muslims have been here for a century or more. We are an integral part and an important part of American society. Statistics show that about half of the Muslims living in America were born here and that percentage is growing as families expand. Those Muslims arriving to America seek economic, democratic, and religous freedom.
We work with the neighbors and community to better the world around us. Well-known American Muslim leaders include Rep. Keith Ellison of Minn, the first American Muslim to be elected to the U.S. Congress; Rep. André Carson (D-Ind.), and Mohammed Hameeduddin who is the Mayor of Teaneck, N.J. Other popular successful Muslim Americans are such people as Dr. Oz, Shaquille O'Neal, and Fareed Zakarie.
Muslims aalso serve in the the armed forces and that area of the government, Salman Hamdani was a first responder in 9/11 who perished and Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan received the Bronze Star and died while serv iing in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Being a Muslim in America means being a part of the United States and a contributor to this great nation.
